“We don’t live only in the present. The past, with all its memories, happenings and experiences, is alive in us. Many times the past is more powerful than the present.”
(Opening comment of Helsinki Forever)
From 2 to 30 October, EXD’09 and the Cinemateca Portuguesa present the film series “
Telling Time”, 12 sessions programmed by Ricardo Matos Cabo.
Telling Time, answers to the Biennale’s theme, proposing a journey through various films, documentaries, experimental films, direct records of the experiences of time, grieving by the passage of time. The films are about different chronologies, memories of people, work, objects and places. The programme encloses a lot of time’s narratives, enigmatic, poetic and evocative of time as a cycle, a season, rhythm, but also as story, as resistance of the forgetfulness.
The opening session symbolizes the idea of the film series – three films about the geological time and the personal experience of time, such as one of James Benning’s latest films, one that crosses his personal history and the questions raised by his films and his observation of the
Spiral Jetty land art piece by Robert Smithson.
The film by Michael Snow,
La Région Centrale (7 October), takes us back to a place before time, almost with no track of human presence. The cicle evokes the traditions and the journey through time, like in the amazing film directed throughout 13 years by the collective of
Shinsuke Ogawa in Japan, or the journeys through the myths in
Balamos by Stavros Tornes. The repetitive rituals of the Tarahumaras American Indians in Mexico, or the lost traditions of the northern European people in the
Peter Nestler’s film, a very special perspective about the social and political history of Helsinki through cinema, these are other reasons to follow the series.
