The EXD’09 Opening Week from 9 to 13 September will kick off the programme with openings of four specially commissioned and designed exhibitions with diverse content but under the same themed banner, “ It’s About Time”.

Quick, Quick, Slow
Word, image and time —
This exhibition documents an alternative history of graphic design in connection with time and notions of motion, acceleration and progression. Spanning the fast-changing practises of the 20th and 21st centuries, the exhibition traces the mutual influences between motion graphics and print, highlighting the eloquent ways designers have found to fill temporal space.

Pace of Design
Nine to Five in Seven Design Studios around the World —
Looking at the daily work of seven designers and studios from around the world, the exhibition surveys the impact of time, rhythm and speed on their individual creative process and production cycle, as distinct cultural subtexts inspire different narratives of time management and appreciation. Pace of design awards the visitor a backstage pass to the glamorous world of design as well as the routine of professional design studios.

Lapse in Time
Design between elasticity and socio cultural responsibility —
This exhibition spotlights young uncompromising designers whose work aspires to a change in paradigm, one that is also temporal. At the opposite end of mainstream production circuits, these distinct creative statements share a radical perspective of product design at the intersection of art, science, sustainability and socio-cultural insight.

Timeless
Less is Better —
Faced with impending financial disaster and mounting environmental concerns, it is time for society to embrace “less” as a positive value instead of a restrictive fact. Creatives from four countries (India, Portugal, South Africa and the United Kingdom) rose to the challenge and propose new concepts and artefacts for the 21st century, in a drive towards more sustainable and economically viable design strategies.

To celebrate its 10th Anniversary, EXD’09 is presenting, on its programme, seven Special Projects in honour of its commitment to the ideals and principles that moulded the Biennale in 1999. Initiated by EXD and inspired by the theme, these projects highlight the impact of time on the processes configured in our society. With long-term solutions in mind and a vision for the future, these seven projects engage established as well as up and coming designers in burning social issues facing society today - spurring action and a shift in attitudes.

Jardim de Santos
It’s about time… to build a lasting legacy for the city and its inhabitants. Working with a multidisciplinary creative team, EXD has developed a major design-driven urban intervention to fully realise the untapped potential of this strategic public space. Reconfigured and attuned to changing contemporary lifestyles, Jardim de Santos will become a highly functional urban space and an added value in Lisbon’s social, economic and cultural dynamics, a garden for the 21st century.

Action for Age
Designing a better future —
This creative lab looks at the role of design in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by an ageing population. In workshops in Lisbon and London, two R&D teams of university students, designers and leading experts from each country develop new projects for services and networks to improve users’ quality of life and social integration. EXD’09 showcases the results in a conference hosted by Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Time Sequences
Stories for a Near Future —
What is a story? What hold do narrative fictions have over us? What is the timeframe and operating logic behind their construction? And what is time? The immaterial we are made of and that can only be captured in stories? At the junction of different formats and creative fields, this project is an exploratory reflection on time and its narratives.

Share
The more you give, the more you have —
Resorting to an everyday object that no one is oblivious or indifferent to, something everybody has but no one really owns, Share proposes an organic, uncontrollable process of disseminating an idea. Share acts as a positive contamination and the bigger the propagation, the more meaningful the experience.

Luanda: Anatomy of Speed
Co-production EXD’09/Trienal de Luanda —
Angola’s capital city, Luanda features in global ranks as the 15th fastest growing city on the planet. It is the fastest growing Portuguese-speaking city in the world and one that aspires to compete with existing megalopolis around the globe, both for its construction levels and incoming population fluxes. With this in mind as well as Portugal’s historical and political link with the city, Experimenta challenged the organizing committee of the Trienal de Luanda for a presentation centred on time. The Special Project Luanda: Anatomy of Speed arose from this challenge.
Curated by Fernando Alvim, this programme features three different projects – a debate, an exhibition and a theatre play. On the one hand, the notion of speed and acceleration, tackled in both the debate and the exhibition; on the other, the fragmentation of time, its dissynchronisation and potential for schizophrenia mirrored in the play by Boris Vian, stage directed by Angolan Rogerio de Carvalho.
10.09.09 - 08.11.09 | Exhibition
Four different moments in times, seen through the eyes of three Angolan creative artists, who address the speed of present and future and the emotional underlying power of memory.
13.09.09 | Debate | 15:00-16:00
With Fernando Alvim, Jose Octavio Serra van Dunem and Paulo Cunha e Silva
The starting point of this debate is a lecture Paulo Cunha e Silva presented in Luanda in 2006/7, entitled “Luanda: Anatomy of Speed”. It focuses on a new approach to the Angolan capital, intersecting the issues of time, speed and acceleration with those of creation, sociology and urban development.
15.09.09 - 19.09.09 | Play | 22:00
The Ants by Boris Vian
Stage: Directed by Rogerio de Carvalho
Actors: Dulce Baptista and Meirinho Mendes
